Ehsan's Growth Analysis
Shopify's app marketplace has 8,000+ apps built by third-party developers. That is not a feature — it is a competitive moat that no competitor can replicate. Every app developer who builds for Shopify has a financial incentive to drive merchants to the platform. That is 8,000+ unpaid salespeople. The genius move was taking only 0% commission on the first $1M of app revenue (changed to this in 2021). This attracted serious developers, not hobbyists. The result: Shopify's ecosystem creates more value than Shopify itself, and that value cannot exist without Shopify. They learned from Apple's App Store model but made it more developer-friendly. That single decision changed the competitive dynamics of the entire e-commerce platform market.
