Ehsan's Growth Analysis
MongoDB executed the most successful open-source-to-cloud transition in database history. Their Atlas cloud service went from 0% to 65%+ of total revenue in about five years. The open-source community download numbers (hundreds of millions) created a massive pool of developers who already knew MongoDB. When those developers needed a managed database for production workloads, Atlas was the obvious choice. The key strategic decision was changing their license to SSPL in 2018 — which prevented AWS and others from offering a competing managed MongoDB service. Critics called it anti-open-source. The stock went up 5x in the next three years. Sometimes the unpopular decision is the right one.
