Ehsan's Analysis
Feature adoption rates in SaaS follow a power law: the top 3 features are used by 80-90% of users, the next 10 features by 20-40%, and everything else by less than 5%. Pendo's analysis of 3,000 SaaS products found that the average product has 40-60% of features with under 5% adoption. This is not a "discovery" problem fixable with better onboarding — it is an overbuilding problem. The most valuable feature adoption metric is "feature adoption breadth per user" — how many distinct features does each user touch monthly? Products with breadth above 8 features have 3x higher retention than products with breadth below 4. But building more features does not increase breadth — it decreases it (more options = more confusion). The counterintuitive feature adoption strategy: remove features with under 3% adoption, invest deeply in the top 10, and measure breadth improvements. Less product, more adoption, higher retention.
